SEPARATION

This prevents the mixing of adjacent soils or aggregates (without impeding water flow).

Applications include needle-punched, stitched, thermally and chemically bonded geotextiles, geotextiles, dense knotless geomesh and sometimes thin geomembranes.

REINFORCEMENT

Using the tensile properties of geotextiles (strength, stiffness) to improve the mechanical properties of the soil layer.

Applications include: geogrids, knotless geomesh, permeable geocomposites, needle-punched and stitched geotextiles with enhanced strength, and other types of geotextiles.

DRAINAGE

Collecting rainwater, groundwater and other liquids and gases, while allowing them to flow in the plane of the geotextile product (e.g. a drainage mat with an openwork plastic core facilitating the flow of water, shielded on one or both sides by a non-woven filter or a non-woven filter on one side and a sealing foil on the other, are all used to help drain water, such as from the backfill behind retaining walls).

The following are used here: geodrainage, thick needle-punched and stitched geotextiles, and permeable geocomposites.

FILTRATION

This involves the retention of soil and other particles subjected to runoff pressure at ground contact, while maintaining fluid flow (reverse filter).

Applications include needle-punched, stitched, thermally and chemically bonded geotextiles and geotextiles.

INSULATION (SEALING)

Applications include: single-layer and multi-layer geomembranes (including reinforced), bentomesh, geomembranes, and bentonite geomembranes.

PROTECTION

Mitigation or prevention by means of a geotextile product for localised damage to the geotechnical system, e.g. erosion of the ground surface, penetration of geomembranes, pipes or systems.

Applications include needle-punched, stitched, thermally and chemically bonded geotextiles and geotextiles.

EROSION PROTECTION

Applications include: cellular geomesh, geomatics, dense knotless geomesh, needle-punched and stitched geotextiles, geotextiles, and permeable geocomposites.
